Stack YOUR Deck*
Building Communities Through Relationships and Engagement
*Fix something, so a desired outcome is achieved.
The Deck has changed my coaching. I was six games into the season before I used the white board. I used a different card everyday; relating a message to my athletes so we could collaboratively generate messaging. It allowed me to correct and re-direct my students’ efforts. I then taught students how to correct and redirect their own efforts. Behavioural flexibility guided our efforts. I have never communicated with players as much as this year. Instead of hiding behind a whiteboard I was building relationships with every player. I look forward to each day, searching through the cards for a “best” message. “Speeching” became communicating! Fixing ceased to be our goal; accepting, challenging and executing (A.C.E.) became our guide. Not sure anything got easier; but everything became more intriguing and challenging.
We put the FUN back into play! We strengthened the player’s intentions. Players began developing stronger internal assets as we developed better external assets.
Our Tenets
- Community is the foundation
- Relationships are the drivers.
- Through sport, health and wellness are our goals.
- Teachers, parents, mentors and coaches are the touch labour…conduits through which we create nourishing environments in which athletes grow.
Our Objectives
Whole person development – physical, emotional, mental and social domains.
Emotional, mental and social dimensions are included to develop a resilience skill set.
Assist athletes in embracing living as organic; things do not always go according to plan though we have the capability of navigating the ups and downs of a well-lived life.
Help athletes become self-directed and self-disciplined human beings.

Concluding Thoughts
In the end, the athlete must take charge…the athletes need self-determination skills.
Our goal is to assist and enable the athlete to grow, emotionally, mentally, socially and physically. The coaching job is NOT easy. A lot is expected. We signed up to guide our youth in functional physical, emotional, mental and social parameters.
A lot needs to be done. We have, in my experience, detailed the physical, technical, tactical dimensions for all levels of all sports. The emotional, mental dimensions at all levels of sport require greater emphasis. More attention to community will also improve the social dimension of sport?
Do we need an EMS (ironic term, eh!) – emotional, mental, social skills coach? Is this a good start?
At elite levels, midget, junior and professional should we have a human performance coach on staff, on the bench! If we think a physical (head) injury should be dealt with immediately, should we not also believe that emotional and mental (psychological) injury needs a steward?
Can it be as simple as changing our focus from outcomes (winning) to process (actions that contribute to winning). Are we willing to explore how we might terrace P.E.M.S. throughout all sport levels? We could start by “Stacking YOUR Deck”.
